'Proms on the Green', Celebrating Friends, 'Dymock Pull' |
| Dymock Pull |
Like the 'Proms on the Green', this is not a Dymock Church event but many church members attend - it's organised every August Bank Holiday weekend by the Friends of the Beauchamp Arms Pub (FOBA). This year the weather wasn't too bad, so there was a good crowd enjoying the rounds of Tug of War, sideshows, stalls selling different products, 'Soak a Bloke, and Sideshows enjoyed by adults and children alike. | Celebrating Friends |
At our Family Services this year we've celebrated Grandparents, Mothers and Fathers, and now this month we celebrated Friends. We heard from the Bible how King David had a friend in King Saul's son, Jonathan, who warned David when Saul became jealous and set out to have David killed, then we considered the attributes of a friend and wrote them up on a flip chart (see pictures). We also looked at the attributes of an acquaintance and decided that they were similar to a friend but acquaintances don't share our emotions as much as a friend does. (Return to Top)
We considered our own relationship with Jesus - do we have a deep relationship in which we know him well and trust him, or is he just an acquaintance.... or even less? Finally we sang the hymn 'What a Friend we have in Jesus' before giving thanks for our friends in our prayers. (Return to Top) |
| 'Proms on the Green' |
This is not a Dymock Church event but many of our members attend. It's organised every year by John and Linda Griffiths, the Landlord and Landlady at the adjacent Beauchamp Arms Pub. The Brettforton Silver Band (a village near Eversham in Worcestershire) come every August to play a concert on our village green in front of the church. The first half of the concert has more general band music and the second half ends with the traditional 'Proms' repertoire of Jerusalem, British Sea Songs and Land of Hope and Glory, gustily sung by the audience. (Return to Top)
Altogether the audience enjoyed 16 pieces of beautiful music - the first half included the theme from The Magnificent Seven, Can't Help Falling in Love and Penny Lane. The second half included 633 Squadron, Trish Tratsch Polka and the famous Can Can, before the 'Proms' items. (Return to Top)
John and Linda provided a bar and pig roast on the village green and the band provided Union Jack flags to wave and 'patriotic souvenirs'. The final piece was accompanied by firework rockets launched from the churchyard! (Return to Top) |
