| The School Choir |
December 17th saw a superb concert by the large choir Philomusica of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire conducted by Linda Parsons. The massed choir of 70 squeezed into the front of the church, augmented by the 20 strong choir of Ann Cam School conducted by their music teacher, Kathryn Skipp, whilst the large audience filled the church right to the back. The programme was entitled 'A Local Christmas' as all the pieces had a connection with the locality. Several of the composers came from the area including Gustav Holst (born in Cheltenham), past organists from Worcester Cathedral, and three pieces written by current members of the choir. The school choir sang several pieces on their own, but to everyone's surprise, they also joined in with several of the main choir's pieces. (Return to Top)
The music included traditional and modern styles including pieces by Trask, Finzi, Rutter and arrangements by Willcocks and Parsons. There were several readings appropriate to the season, and two well-known carols for all to join in with. A 'retiring collection' was taken for 'Winston's Wish', a childhood bereavement charity. | School Christingle Service |
As usual, Ann Cam School came into Dymock Church on December 15th for their end of term Christmas celebration, accompanied by many parents such that the church was full. (Return to Top)
It began with a procession of all the children from the back of the church up the nave, each carrying a lighted 'Christingle' (an orange topped with a lighted candle, click here for an explanation of Christingle) which were placed on the altar table. Everyone joined in the singing of the carol O Little Town of Bethlehem before each class gave a presentation of songs and readings they'd prepared beforehand, including the pre-school nursery class. Wrapped gifts were then presented to over two dozen people who have helped at the school over the past 12 months. (Return to Top) |
| Carols in the Pub |
Another annual event is carol singing in the Beauchamp Arms Pub. Friday December 9th saw a packed bar of happy 'carollers' who sang a number of popular carols, interspersed with Christmas-themed readings by members of Dymock village. (Return to Top)
This was the 13th consecutive year Dymock church has promoted the event - each year a collection has been made and given to charity. The chosen recipient this time was GEAR (Gloucester Emergency Accommodation Resource), who provide help and services to a surprisingly large number of homeless people in the city of Gloucester. One of their directors, Brian Jones, was on hand to give a short talk about the organisation and over £350 pounds was collected. (Return to Top) |
| Tree of Light |
Each year, the Beauchamp Arms Pub in Dymock provides a large Christmas Tree on the village green, covered in lights which have been sponsored by members of the village who want to remember a departed loved one. The list of names can be seen in a Book of Remembrance in the pub. (Return to Top)
This year, the lights were lit on Saturday December 3rd in a short ceremony including carols led by the Dymock church choir. There were also several stalls selling Christmas fair including hot mulled wine, Christmas cards, and cakes. Before the ceremony, the choir entertained with a selection of carols, accompanied by three members of the trombone group "Walk on the Wild Side". (Return to Top) |
