Chinese Evening, Cheque Presentation, Taize Service |
| Taize Family Service |
Our monthly Family Service on February 27th was in 'Taize' style. Taize is a place in France where a monastic order run a monastery that attracts hundred of thousands of people every year, especially the young, to participate in their worship using its own identifiable style with periods of silence and uniquely identifiable music. The Service largely followed our usual 'All-Age' format but included several Taize songs as well as music from Peru and Africa. Introduced by one of our Readers, most of the Service was led by different members of our choir with the address based on the Gospel reading from St Matthew given by our organist, Bob May. The songs included 'Bless The Lord, O My Soul' and the 'Peruvian Gloria' accompanied on Bodhrun Drum', O Lord Hear My Prayer' hummed quietly during the prayers as well as and 'Pater noster qui es in coelis' (The Lord's Prayer) including accompaniment by the children using some of our hand-bells and finished with everyone being encouraged to 'wiggle' to the African 'Sanna' (Hosanna). | Cheque Presentation |
A grant cheque for £8,000 from Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust
(GHCT) was presented to St Mary’s Church on Sunday 6th February in support of our Restoration Appeal. During the past decade, St Mary's has supported the invaluable work of this charity through their annual Ride and Stride Appeal
by generous sponsorship from keen (and slightly more reluctant) cyclists as they pedaled their way round the countryside looking for interesting and sometimes obscure historic churches. It is with great gratitude that this year, we have received a welcome boost for our own campaign which will allows us to proceed with the urgent repairs to the Tower Roof.

The cheque was presented by Mrs Jane Jenner-Fust (on the left) representing the GHCT and received by our Churchwarden Mrs Jean Eversham (Click here to see the pictures of the damage) (Return to Top) |
| Chinese Evening |
Last autumn, our organist and his wife, Bob and Chris May, went to the People's Republic of China for their holiday and took a load of photos. On Saturday 5th February, Chris gallantly cooked a Chinese meal for over 50 people in the Parish Hall, assisted by some of our ladies, and Bob showed the edited collection of their photos, together with a video they'd brought back with them, celebrating the Chinese New Year which had begun a couple of days earlier. (Return to Top)
There were Chinese Horoscopes on each table so you could work-out which year you were born in (this is the year of the Rabbit), 12 descriptions of your personality according to the (Chinese) year of your birth, and a light-hearted quiz on Chinese geography, facts and figures. (Return to Top)
The Mays kindly donated the proceeds from the evening to our Restoration Appeal - it made a terrific profit of £475. (Return to Top) |
