Children's Activity Day - 2

The second session looked at how people or things can be different from what they appear to be and showed the excerpt "You're not what I expected". It looked at Prince Caspian's reaction to finding out that King Peter Pevensie was in fact a boy like him, and not a 'super-hero' as he'd imagined. The discussion considered where things have turned out different for us from what we'd imagined and how Jesus was different from the Messiah the Jews had expected. Associated with this session was a form of 'Kim's Game', but instead of having to remember all the things on a tray there was just lots of sweets and chocolates. The children were allowed to select and keep one each, except one was just a small ball of Plasticine. We didn't expect anyone to chose that, but one boy did because he likes play-dough, and he found he'd won a £1 coin hidden in it - it wasn't what it seemed!

We ate our 'bring your own' lunch and, as it was a sunny day, the children were able to run off excess energy outside, much to the relief of the adult helpers - and no doubt to the children as well! (Return to top)

The third session looked at handling change and showed the excerpt "Who Lived Here?" in which the children come across the ruins of a castle and realise that it was their home where they were crowned kings and queens the first time they were in Narnia 1300 years ago. The discussion looked at things that have changed in our lives, homes, and schools and how we've changed over time. (Return to top)

The last excerpt showed the dwarf 'Trumpkin' tied up and dropped into the lake and left to drown by the Telmarine soldiers, but rescued by one of the Pevensie boys who dived in to save him. The discussion asked if the children knew of anyone who'd been rescued, or even if they'd been rescued themselves, and went on to considered how Jesus rescued us from the result of our disobedience (sin). We played a game of 'Rescue' in pairs. The pairs started on a paper 'island' stuck to the floor. One was blindfolded and the other had to direct them to 'rescue' Trumpkin using words only, no touching - well not Trumpkin but a ball of paper pretending to be Trumpkin, and then guide them safely back to the island.

The day finished with another short act of worship when we heard the second part of the Easter account read - the part about the Resurrection... which the followers of Jesus hadn't been expecting. Jesus rose again to new life so that we might have eternal life with God too, after we die - which is why we associate the new life of eggs with Easter. (Return to top) Picture of Making Nests
